Prostheses prepared for congenital, trauma-related or post-cancer cavities in the chin and/or face area are called maxillofacial prostheses.
These spaces can be inside the mouth or outside the mouth. Those in the mouth; those with the upper and lower jaws outside the mouth; includes the eye, nose and ear region. There may be a deficiency of one of these regions, or there may be a deficiency of several of them together.
In the presence of such deficiencies in the face area, it causes a serious loss in the quality of life when not treated. It can cause problems in functional activities such as swallowing and eating, as well as psychological problems in the individual in appearance.
What is the Purpose of Jaw & Face Prosthesis?
The purpose of chin and facial prostheses; to improve the aesthetic appearance, to alleviate the psychological pressure caused by physical difference in social life, to reduce or eliminate the problems such as speech, chewing and swallowing caused by the defect.
Jaw & Face Prosthesis Treatment Stages
There are two methods to close these cavities, which may be post-surgical or congenital. These methods are; surgery and prosthesis. It can be preferred in cases where the cavities are small and do not need to be re-operated by the operating surgeon in order to be closed with a surgical operation. However, most of the time, the prosthesis meets the aesthetic expectation much better.
Such deficiencies can be evaluated and treated by a trained Prosthesis Specialist.
Facial prostheses are made individually by using soft silicone material to resemble the skin structure. Most of the time, symmetrical anatomy is used to achieve aesthetics.
Maxillofacial prostheses receive support from the existing space, but often this support is not enough. In this case, implant support should be considered, and the condition and amount of the bone should be evaluated. However, in some cases, implant support cannot be obtained or may not be sufficient. In these cases, prosthesis-specific adhesives may be recommended by the physician.
In some cases, both the maxilla and facial tissue may be affected and a combined prosthesis may be required. In this case, two prostheses can be prepared separately, and it can be ensured that they receive support from each other with a mechanism that will connect them.
How is the Care of Jaw & Face Prostheses?
The care of both oral prostheses and facial prostheses is the same. It can be cleaned under water, by brushing with detergent or soap, with a toothbrush specially reserved for the prosthesis. Toothpaste should never be preferred for cleaning, as it can scratch the dentures and cause them to wear out quickly.
If the implant is preferred as the prosthesis holder; around the implant should be gently cleaned with a wet cloth on a regular basis. If adhesive is recommended by the physician, the denture must be cleaned by removing the adhesive completely every day. It is mandatory for individuals who use this type of prosthesis to go to regular check-ups!
What is Eye Prosthesis? How is it done?
They are prostheses applied for cosmetic purposes to patients whose eyes are not congenital or surgically removed. These prostheses do not contribute to visual function. Two different types of eye prosthesis can be prepared as ocular and orbital, depending on the need. In the Ocular Prosthesis insertion process, first of all, it is necessary to prepare the eye socket for the prosthesis. For this, a ball is placed instead of the eye during the removal of the eye. A few weeks later, the eye socket mold is taken for the eye prosthesis and the prosthesis is prepared. Then, the prosthetic eye is placed in the eye socket and the finishing touches are made according to the position of the prosthesis. After the mold of the eye socket is taken, the prosthetic eye is prepared within a few days. After this stage, it may be necessary to come to the prosthesis application several times until the prosthesis takes its final form. Unlike the ocular prosthesis, the orbital prosthesis also includes the surrounding tissues along with the eye.
Can an eye prosthesis be fitted to those who do not have a congenital eye?
Congenital absence of an eye or a very small eye (if there is no visual function) especially requires wearing a prosthesis. Since the eye volume is lacking in these patients, the development of facial bones may be incomplete. For this reason, these patients should be fitted with prostheses without losing time, and these prostheses should be replaced with larger ones at regular intervals to ensure symmetrical facial development.
